Accidental landlords’ are landlords whose decision to let their property is as a result of circumstance, rather than design. There are any number of reasons that someone might become an accidental landlord, including inheriting the property, relocation, or separation. Whatever the circumstances, the owner(s) has decided that their best, or only, option is to let that property rather than to sell it or remain in residence.
Emigration to Britain from Ireland may further complicate matters. There may be thousands of Irish people now living across Britain who have unintentionally become landlords back in Ireland. Many of the people who rent out their home don’t understand the tax burden that comes with it. In practice, owning a rental property is a bit like running a small business. You must keep records, file tax returns and be aware of the legal obligations placed on landlords.
One such accidental landlord and a journalist have contacted us to try and gather the experiences of other accidental landlords. If you find yourself in this position please contact them here.
