Cancer Comhrá/Conversations

This year, we launched our new cancer awareness campaign, Cancer Comhrá, meaning Cancer Conversations in Irish (pronounced Co-ra)

Cancer Comhrá/Conversations' central aim is to enable the Irish community to feel more confident about talking about cancer and to dispel the fears surrounding the word cancer. We want to ensure that the Irish community in Britain are well informed about cancer, motivated to take preventive action and have access to high quality information and support. We also aim to raise much needed awareness of the high levels of cancer among the Irish in Britain.

This campaign is supported by Macmillan Cancer Support.

What does this campaign involve?

We are hosting cancer awareness workshops both online and in-person with the aim to encourage the community to start talking about cancer. These workshops will cover different areas in each session with some focusing on a certain cancer and others focusing on community support services.

We also have resources and information here on our website and will provide support, updates and screening information.

Online workshops- We are hosting Zoom workshops where we will welcome specialists to cover different topics throughout each session. Click to our Cancer Comhrá events page to sign up to future events.

Don’t worry if you miss a workshop - each recording will be added to the events webpage.

These workshops are promoted through the Cancer Comhrá events webpage, but if you would like to receive updates of these events, please email health@irishinbritain.org.

What do the events look like?

In-person workshops - Throughout 2023, we are holding workshop events at different locations across London. These events have scheduled talks throughout the day focusing on different types of cancer including topics such as signs and symptoms of cancer; what to look out for; how to get tested; and where to go for help and information.

These workshops are promoted through this Cancer Comhrá events webpage, but if you would like to receive updates of these events, please email health@irishinbritain.org.

Online workshops- We are hosting Zoom workshops where we will welcome specialists to cover different topics throughout each session. Click to our Cancer Comhrá events page to sign up to future events.

Who can attend these events?

The online events are free and open to anyone who would like to attend including both our member groups and members of the public. The in-person workshops will be hosted within our London based organisations due to funding restrictions however, this is a pilot programme that we hope to expand nationwide thereafter.
