Census roadshows in July: Get your Qs answered

Back to all news

census lots of people

We’re halfway through the census cycle and that all–important 2021 questionnaire will be here quicker than it may seem.

Since data obtained through the census is used to inform details of equality and the national allocation of resources, it’s essential that the population is represented accurately.

Data from the last census suggests that many people with Irish heritage do not take advantage of the opportunity to ‘Tick the Irish Box’ which could be used to provide resources for organizations that specifically benefit the Irish community. Irish in Britain urges people to keep this in mind when completing the questionnaire.

Improving how the Census is distributed and accessed is also crucial. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is aiming to conduct the 2021 Census online, which is a significant change from the 2011 Census which was primarily conducted on paper.

One concern with having an online census is that people with lower literacy levels may be discouraged or unable to complete the questionnaire. The government has stated that care will need to be taken to support these people.

The ONS is holding four roadshows to share news and information about the proposed content for the 2021 questionnaire in England and Wales. Staff will be available to answer your questions.

The events are free and staff will cover the development and testing of the new design and content in the questionnaire. This will include looking at the ethnic group question, the possibility of additional response options and the design for online questions. Register your place at one of the roadshows now to learn about the progress made and help inform the design of the next questionnaire.
