Darkness into Light walk launched

Back to all news

The Darkness into Light London walk has been launched by the new CEO of Pieta House Brian Higgins and Irish Ambassador Dan Mulhall on Monday, 13 April.

The event was attended by representatives from Icap, the Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy charity, who came on board last year to help and support the walk. In December 2014, the counselling service was presented with a cheque to thank them for their efforts. The launch also saw the announcement of the ESB Group as sponsor of the London walk.

Last year, the Darkness into Light walk was brought to London thanks to the support and coordination of the Kerry Association London and its dedicated members. The walk took place on the 10th May 2014 with an estimated 500 participants taking part in the charity event.

The Darkness into Light walk will take place in London on Friday night 8th of May into Saturday morning 9th of May. It is a unique, early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is breaking. The early dawn represents hope and is symbolic of the work of Pieta House; bringing people from darkness back into the light.

Brian Higgins, CEO of Pieta House, said: “Pieta House, I have found in the last few weeks as CEO is very unique. It is effectively a community organisation on a national and now an international basis. We have a great appreciation for the London community as they have addressed the crisis of suicide and self–harm. The community has effectively started the conversation that demolishes the stigma regarding these issues. As a result, our relationship with Icap in London is fantastic and is very important for all of us. The work of the London committee is courageous and brave as it is an awful amount of work to plan and execute. It is important to note that a third of our income comes from the Darkness into Light. We are fully committed as long as you are committed to organise, marshal and take part in the walks.”
