Dementia Journal

Back to all news

The first of two articles written in collaboration with a Traveller –led organisation raises awareness of the issue of dementia among Gypsies and Travellers.

Despite their low life expectancy Travellers have increasing levels of dementia and often at younger ages. Although they have the poorest health in the population, their needs are neglected, they have difficulty accessing services and when they do, they are dissatisfied.

The article highlights health and social factors which increase the risk of dementia. It notes the lack of awareness of dementia within the community but particularly the cultural and structural factors which prevent families seeking help. It is clear that while families are very willing, caring for somebody with dementia on inadequate trailer sites is not easy. However if help is offered by a trusted professional or and is respectful of the ways of Travellers it will be very welcome.
