Today we are talking about supporting carers
When we hear the word carer – do we think of families or professional carers? The majority of carers in the UK are families. In the Irish community the term carer does not come into our mind when we look after those we love. We see it as a natural family role. So when you are looking after our loved one with a diagnosis of dementia it can be exhausting and worrying. This week take some time out and think “who do I know that is a family carer – can I give them a break or even visit them so they can chat about how they are?” We can all too often forget that the carers are in as much need of support and you can help.
The Alzheimer’s Society has excellent resources on carers and looking after yourself.
We would also like to mention a big congratulations to HE Daniel Mulhall Irish Ambassador, and Ellen Stafford Irish Community Services Greenwich and Bexley and Lewisham who are jointly hosting an event at the Embassy to acknowledge the contribution of carers to the Irish community on Tuesday 10 June .
