Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Month 2017

Back to all news

Text that reads cancer

Ethnic Awareness Cancer Awareness Month (EMCAM) is a campaign run by Cancer Equality to highlight the culturally sensitive needs of minority communities in relation to cancer.

Their focus this year is to create Community Cancer Champions. They aim to educate community members to communicate information about cancer and how to prevent it to empower others to take action.

July has also been about celebrating the way our communities care for people with cancer.

If you’re interested in becoming a Community Cancer Champion, contact Cancer Equality for more information.

Irish in Britain facilitates cancer awareness workshops throughout Britain, primarily to encourage the Irish community to start talking about cancer. We also aim to help people understand the symptoms associated with the common types of cancer such as bowel cancer to encourage them to take up screening and seek help early, when treatment is likely to be successful.

It is often the case in Irish communities that people are reluctant to go to the doctor if they have concerns, we work hard to encourage people to push past that barrier and go, because that visit could save your life. Many cancers are curable if treated early enough.

See Dr Mary Tilki’s advice on cancer and read the summary of our policy advisory group titled Cancer Does Not Discriminate including accounts from cancer survivors in the community.

Get in touch if you would like to find out more about the workshops we run.
