This consultation is on proposed legacy mechanisms and includes draft legislation that will go through Westminster.  It will give the government and policy makers the chance to listen to the views of victims, survivors and wider society and be alerted to any issues or concerns.

The reason for the event is that the Northern Ireland Office’s legacy consultation “Addressing the Legacy of Northern Ireland’s Past” on 11 May 2018 runs until 17.00 on 10 September 2018. A Consultation is the process whereby the public are given the opportunity to give their opinions on legislation the government is going to deliver.

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE PART?

This is an opportunity for all victims and survivors to give their views on the establishment of these mechanisms and it is critically important that this legislation considers the views of those who have suffered most

If you come to this event, the Commission for Victims and Survivors (CVS) will gather your feedback to help them to inform their own consultation response and the Commissioner’s formal policy advice to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. CVS can also provide guidance if you want to have your say by submitting an individual response directly to the Northern Ireland Office. For more information on the consultation, please see their website https://www.cvsni.org/understanding-legacy/.

The Commission for Victims and Survivors strongly believe that through listening to and promoting the voices of those most affected by the conflict, a victim–centred approach can be taken in the development of the proposed mechanisms within the consultation. The Commission’s principles also ensure that we respect equality and value diversity and that every voice counts so we are keen to hear your thoughts.

The discussion on the evening will include:

•             Introduction

•             Background

•             Why the consultation is important

•             Overview of each proposed mechanism

•             Discussion on what it will mean for you? How to ensure it is victim centred? How/can it work for you?

•             What is not in the consultation

Reminder: In order to effectively engage with you, attendance at this event is by invitation and registration is essential for admittance.

You may wish to pass this invitation on to other groups or individuals affected by conflict. We are acutely aware that many persons living in GB have been affected by the Northern Ireland conflict and that they may wish for their voice to be heard.
