International Stress Awareness week 2020

Back to all news

As we prepare ourselves for a second national lockdown, managing stress and our mental health is of critical importance.

This year has already been challenging mentally and emotionally, with many of us experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety and depression in the wake of the Covid–19 pandemic.

Statistics from the Office of National Statistics in June 2020 reported that almost one in five adults were likely to be experiencing some form of depression during the pandemic; double the figures shown pre–pandemic.

Feeling stressed or anxious was the most common way adults (84.9 percent) experiencing some form of depression felt their well–being was affected.

Irish in Britain are running accredited Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Awareness courses and resilience webinars to help support the wellbeing of our members, as well as helping our members best support the people who use their services.

Mental health is also intertwined with our physical health and resilience, with excessive stress increasing the risk of heart disease and other physical ailments.

Last month we launched an online version of our Green Hearts course, designed to raise awareness of how to implement a heart–healthy lifestyle, including how to manage stress and increase mental and emotional resilience.

We are running a webinar on stress management and resilience to support our members and the Irish community during these challenging times.
