Irish in Britain represents community at DFAT 2015 conference

We were delighted to participate in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 2015 conference in Dublin Castle bringing to the discussion the views and experiences of our diverse Irish community in Britain. DFAT launched their foreign policy review “Global Island” which reflects a view of the Irish Abroad as contributing to all aspects of Irish life through culture, business and community.

‘Global Island’ recognises that engagement with the diaspora is a two way process engaging with the interests and needs of the Irish abroad to the “mutual benefit of Ireland and the Irish abroad”. It includes some very concrete ways in which the DFAT will support and engage with the Diaspora globally such as the government’s ongoing commitment to support the most vulnerable through the Emigrant Support Programme. This is something greatly welcomed by Irish in Britain on behalf of all our members who provide essential services to people experiencing difficulties at different stages of their lives – from the most elderly to the new arrivals.

There were some great initiatives announced by Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for the Diaspora such as the global civil society forum planned for 2015 which we welcome strongly. The strategy also recognises that the Irish Aboard wish to have their voice heard at home and notes the recommendations of the constitutional convention on votes for the Irish Abroad in presidential election.

The document reflects many of the hopes and aspirations we set out in our ten point plan when the Minister’s role was established and we are delighted that the community’s aspirations connect so well with the Minister for Foreign Affairs vision for diaspora engagement.
