Irish in Britain to create new resources to support carers of people living with dementia

Back to all news

Irish in Britain is delighted to announce that it has been successful in bidding for Department of Health and Social Care and Race Equality Foundation / Covid–19, Dementia and People from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities Fund.

The award of £20,455 recognises the higher incidence of dementia in the Irish community and the commitment of family carers supporting people living with the condition, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim of the Cuimhne Carers Project is to provide family carers with culturally sensitive resources online to help and support them in their caring roles. The four-month project of activities starting in August will include provision of:

• Online information about dementia and the experience of dementia from the person’s perspective

• A bank of culturally appropriate resources such as reminiscence materials, music, poetry and sporting memories

• A series of webinar, live online training and workshops about communication, practical caring skills, legal/financial matters and end of life care

• Website information and resources about external services such as Admiral Nurses, Alzheimer’s Society and local Irish organisations who offer support to people with dementia and their carers

• A secure online carers forum offering a safe place to meet, to share thoughts and feelings, learn from and support each other.

• Information, advice and support about self-care for carers.
