Irish in Britain’s submission for new diaspora policy

Back to all news

Irish in Britain recently submitted a response to the Irish government’s consultation call for its next diaspora policy. You can find a link to our submission below.

Our submission includes discussion of the challenges and opportunities ahead for the Irish in Britain in the context of population demographics and the changing profile of our community, issues presented by Brexit and the development opportunities of the Emigrant Support Programme.

The issues raised are informed by regular consultations and interactions with our members, as well as from a strategic review.

In our submission, we call for wider promotion of the positive impact of the Emigrant Support Programme, the need for culturally sensitive health care and support, recognition of the diversity of the diaspora and more investment in research projects.

Irish in Britain would like to see the development of a dynamic policy that facilitates engagement from diaspora communities and is bold in articulating the responsibilities of us all in that dialogue.

The call for submissions has now closed and the new diaspora policy will be published in 2020.
