Dr Mary Tilki joined representatives from across the Irish and British community last nigth at the reception for the President at the Guildhall. Dr Tilki shared her thoughts with us:
“This most enjoyable reception in honour of the President and Mrs Higgins was held at the ancient and splendid London Guildhall. It was hosted by the Lord Mayor Fiona Woolf, the Sherrifs and Aldermen and Commoners of the City of London.
The beauty and grace of the Guildhall was enhanced by the pomp and ceremony, particularly the Trumpeters of the Life Guards, and the band and drums of the Honourable Artillery Company and the Countess of Wessex String orchestra.
The guests included business leaders from the City, Ambassadors many different countries and of course our own Ambassador of Ireland Dan Mulhall and his wife Greta, the Tanaiste and several MPs.
The Lord Mayor, spoke of the business links with Ireland and the interdependence of both countries and she highlighted the cultural contribution Irish poets and writers have made to British literature. The President spoke of the intertwined histories of Ireland and Britain which have been turbulent at times but which have never been so respectful and friendly. He thanked the UK for support during the recent economic crisis but was pleased to report the progress Ireland has made, in repaying its loans and growing the economy.
It was particularly moving to hear Amhrán na bhFiann played by the massed musicians, knowing that this could not have happened as recently as a decade ago.
