UK Civil Society Almanac

NCVO’s 2018 almanac compiles the key data behind the UK’s voluntary sector, including information on volunteer involvement, funding data and workforce statistics. Consult the almanac for perspective on where civil society is heading in the UK.

Charity Commission pack for new trustees

All new trustees will now receive a welcome pack from the Charity Commission, which the commission have described as a “firm but friendly regulatory handshake”. The pack is available for download on their website and may also be helpful to current trustees or charity employees.

Cyber Security breaches report

The Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport recently published a report on charity action in cyber security and the impact of cyber breaches in 2018. The report sheds a light on the potential costs of inaction and a lack of preparation around cyber security.

Report on the future of National Lottery contributions

The House of Commons committee on public accounts has recently published a report on the future of the National Lottery. The report addresses concerns about a fall in lottery income for good causes and discusses the effects this could have on the spending commitments of lottery distributors.

Update on Charitable Safeguarding Taskforce

The Charity Commission has released an update on the work of its charity safeguarding taskforce. The taskforce was created in February following a spate of safeguarding scandals in the charitable sector. The update shows a considerable expansion of cases and reports under review.

Local Charity and Community Groups Struggling More Than Ever

Local Giving have recently published their annual “Local Charity and Community Group Sustainability Report “. Their findings show a sector that is worried about the future, with less than half of surveyed charities confident that they could sustain themselves financially over the next five years.

Report on Citizenship & Civic Engagement

The House of Lords committee on citizenship and civic engagement has just published their final report “The ties that bind: Citizenship and civic engagement in the 21st century“. The report outlines current civic engagement trends and identifies ways the government and other organisations can encourage civic activity, many of which are directly relevant to non–profits.
