RTÉ has appointed Fiona Mitchell current deputy foreign editor as the first London correspondent since closing its London Bureau.
Irish in Britain CEO, Jennie McShannon, has high expectations and has already Tweeted a woman–to–woman welcome. “Fiona is already a familiar face for RTE viewers”, she said. “A woman correspondent will chime with the community here. I think she is well able to reshape RTE approach to Ireland’s closest neighbour and understand how Irish in Britain fits into the global picture.”
The appointment comes about two years after the broadcaster decided to close its London bureau, which had a staff of five including London editor Brian O’Connell, as part of a drive to cut costs across the company by some €25 million.
