Counting continues across several constituencies as many Parties are still digesting the results. While there have been many surprises already, one that will be felt across Ireland’s Global community will be the loss of Jimmy Deenihan in the 32nd Dáil. Mr Deenihan was appointed as Ireland’s first ever Minister of State for the Diaspora in July 2014, and in that time assured that diaspora issues were at the top of the Governments agenda.
Peter McNulty, CEO of Irish in Britain said that “The creation of a dedicated Minister has been of significant benefit to the Irish in Britain Diaspora and greatly enhanced our relationship with the previous Government. We would like to offer our appreciation to Minister Deenihan TD for the unprecedented access and engagement with our community here in Britain that he offered as Minister for Diaspora Affairs. We hope that a new Minister for the Diaspora will be appointed as a matter of priority once the next Government forms.”
