The number of suicides in Britain has risen sharply to its highest level since 2002. A total of 6,507 suicides were registered by coroners in the UK in 2018, up 11.8 percent on the previous year, according to the Office of National Statistics.

In response to the high levels of mental illness and suicide rates in the Irish community in Britain, Green Hearts launched a mental health charter in May of this year.

By promoting a culture of awareness, understanding and inclusivity within Irish organisations in Britain, the aim is to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage people who are struggling to cope to seek support.

The charter is currently being piloted with Tir Chonaill Gaels GAA club, as part of our partnership over 30 players from the club took part in the annual Darkness into Light walk in London earlier this year.

We also ran a number of awareness–raising events including Gambling Awareness training and a wellbeing talk for the London Rose 2019 finalists.
