World Suicide Prevention Day

Back to all news

More than 6,000 people die by suicide a year in the UK and the Republic of Ireland – an average of 18 a day. Suicide levels in the Irish community have remained consistently high for over three decades and have not shown the decline seen in other populations.

Mental ill–health and suicide are particular issues for Irish Travellers in addition to their low life expectancy and poor health profile.

World Suicide Prevention day is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and to encourage individuals and organisations to make a commitment to improving the mental health of our community while also recognising the wonderful work that’s already underway.

When it comes to saving more lives, we don’t have all the answers yet, but there are some simple steps that we can all take to help support ourselves and the people around us. This year, the International Association for Suicide Prevention is promoting an initiative called take5tosavelives.org. By taking 5 minutes to get involved and become informed, you will be part of a worldwide movement to save lives.

There are excellent initiatives underway within the Irish community in Britain, including the Darkness Into Light walk organised by the Kerry Association London. Over 800 members of the London Irish community come together to raise awareness about suicide and self–harm. The Darkness into Light London walk took place from the Clayton Crown Hotel, Cricklewood for the third year running.

Irish in Britain’s member organisation, iCAP (Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy), provides accessible, culturally–sensitive therapy services to Irish migrants, and people of Irish descent, living in the UK.
