Ultan will reflect on the meaning of 'Taking the Boat' and the experiences of people travelling to and fro between Ireland since the 1950s.

All our Thoughtful Thursday sessions are free of charge and open to all.

This session may be of interest to all keen to gain a better understanding of what life for people from Irish communities was like, and diverse experiences of men, women and children taking the boat to and from Ireland.

It will be especially useful for family, friends, volunteers and staff caring for our community members living with dementia, to gain insight into the past so as to support conversations and reminiscence activities.

To facilitate everyone's comfort, you can join this session with a cup of tea without being visible or heard. We welcome your questions and thoughts. You will be able to type questions in the session. You are also very welcome to email questions ahead of time to champions@irishinbritain.org

We look forward to hearing your suggestions of questions and reflections. Ultan promises to address as many of these as possible.

We would love to hear what "Taking the Boat" might mean to you and memories on this theme that you feel comfortable sharing with our Irish in Britain community.

Irish historian Ultan Cowley, a former emigrant, is the son of actors John Cowley & Anne D'Alton, stars of RTE’s popular rural soap, ‘The Riordans’. He is the author of The men who built Britain: A History of the Irish Navvy, based on recorded interviews with Irish migrant labourers, tradesmen, British middle management, and family members about their experiences of working in 20th century British construction.

Ultan uses music and imagery to bring his work to life and has produced an audio documentary, CD Voices of the Men who built Britain. For more see his website:www.ultancowley.com
