Irish in Britain's Cuimhne team is pleased to invite you all to a special Thoughtful Thursday on Hearing and Memory with guest speaker Dr Eithne Heffernan
Hearing conditions are extremely common, especially among people with memory problems. These conditions include hearing loss, tinnitus, and sensitivity to sound. They often create challenges for people to communicate and socialise with others. Hearing loss can make it difficult to diagnose and manage memory problems.
What range of hearing conditions might people have?
What support is out there for people with hearing conditions?
What are some of the difficulties and concerns that might stop people from getting a hearing test?
How do the experiences and identities of the Deaf community and the hard-of-hearing community differ?
What can we do to challenge stigma around Deafness and hearing loss?
What can we do to support inclusion of people with hearing conditions in community activities?
How can people with hearing conditions be enabled to access meetings virtually?
Why might hearing conditions be common among people living with forms of memory loss such as dementia?
Tune in to find out!
This session may be of interest to community members of all ages from across Irish in Britain, including family carers of people living with deafness and/or living with dementia.
It will also be of interest to front line staff volunteers and trustees across our network of organisations seeking to support inclusion.
Eithne is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham where she is conducting a project about what research should be conducted in the future on the topic of memory problems (e.g. dementia, mild cognitive impairment) and hearing conditions (eg hearing loss, tinnitus, sensitivity to sound). Eithne is also a member of the Dementia Carers Campaign Network in Ireland and has personal experience of caring for a relative with dementia.
To facilitate everyone's comfort, you can join this session with a cup of tea without being visible or heard.
We welcome your questions and thoughts. You will be able to type questions in the session and these will be put discussed by Eithne and Cuimhne panellists Dr Mary Tilki, Zibiah Loakthar and Aisling McDowell.
As always, our Thoughtful Thursday sessions are free of charge and open to people of all communities - please spread the word!
