Irish in Britain's Cuimnhe team invites you to join us for our Thoughtful Thursday online gathering on 15 July discussing Irish nurses in Britain with author Ethel Corduff
Zoom
We are delighted to welcome guest speaker Ethel Corduff to discuss her new book being launched this month entitled "Ireland's Loss: Britain's Gain: Irish nurses in Britain Nightingale to Millennium".
The Irish have a long history of nursing and caring worldwide and particularly in Britain. Irish nurses have been significantly involved with nursing in Britain for over a century.
Ethel served in the NHS for over 40 years in a wide range of hospitals. As an Irish woman who came to England in 1964 to begin nurse training, Ethel has been very aware of Irish nurses' immense contribution.
Aiming to put this contribution on record, for over 20 years Ethel has researched, prepared and compiled this volume. Ethel's book spanning 345 pages draws upon personal experiences of individual Irish nurses across the spectrum of the service and includes chapters on Irish Nurse Leaders in Britain, Irish Male Nurses in Britain and Irish Nurses in London.
Our Thoughtful Thursday session is free of charge and open to all.
Please email champions@irishinbritain.org for zoom joining details.
This session may be of interest to community members from across Irish in Britain, particularly those with an interest in the NHS and the nursing profession, those interested in Irish heritage and those curious to hear directly from the writer of this new book.
The session may be of special interest to younger generations keen to gain a better understanding of what relatives' lives may have been like as Irish nurses in Britain. It will be useful too for people caring for friends and family living with dementia, to gain insight into the past in order to support conversations about the past and reminiscence activities.
To facilitate everyone's comfort, you can join this session with a cup of tea without being visible or heard. We welcome your questions and reflections about the history and experiences of Irish nurses in Britain and Ethel's journey to write the book.
You will also be able to type your questions in the session. These will then be put to Ethel by panellists Zibiah Loakthar, Aisling McDowell and Dr Mary Tilki from our Irish in Britain Cuimhne team.
You are also very welcome to email questions ahead of the session to champions@irishinbritain.org
