Congratulations to Anne K, Annie M, Catherine K, Debbie F, Dolores P, Joan M, Margaret V, Mary N, Mary P, Maureen M, Nuala P, Sarah C, Sue K, Tracey W for successfully completing a special training day on Memory Loss and Dementia on 21st October 2015.
Back to all
The training was delivered by Dr Mary Tilki as part of Irish in Britain’s Cuimhne Champions project. The workshop helped participants to develop new understanding about memory loss and dementia and think about actions to take to improve how people with memory loss are viewed and treated. There was plenty of great discussion about practical actions people might take to help organisations be more accessible and welcoming to people with memory loss, drawing on the great wealth of knowledge and experience of all the group participants.
Participants reflected on gaining from the workshop:
“An insight into the condition and the signs and symptoms”
“A better understanding about what it would be like to have memory loss”
“Greater insight in to the difficulties people face especially if emotionally involved”
“An understanding of how frustrating it (memory loss and caring for people with memory loss) can be and the difficulties of finding respite”
“An understanding of the visual perception aspects of dementia”
And “a lot more clues of how to talk to people with memory loss”
The workshop, held at Glyndon Community Centre in Plumstead, was organised by Irish in Britain in partnership with Irish Community Services in Greenwich, Bexley and Lewisham. We were very pleased to welcome Dementia Advisor Janet Ley from Alzheimer’s Society Greenwich in the afternoon. Janet gave a very useful talk about how assessment and diagnosis of dementia works locally in Greenwich with lots of opportunity for participants to ask questions. Participants also learnt more from Zibiah about Irish in Britain’s Cuimhne Champions scheme and our range of volunteer opportunities.
To find out about further training opportunities in this field and how you can become in Irish in Britain’s project to support people with memory loss or become a Cuimhne Champion please contact Dr Zibiah Alfred Loakthar: volunteer@irishinbritain.org
