Our Cuimhne team welcomed members of the Haringey Irish Centre to a workshop on Understanding Memory Loss and Dementia on Tuesday 13 August.

Dr Mary Tilki and I were pleased to meet with members of Haringey Irish Centre at a Cuimhne workshop on Understanding Memory Loss and Dementia on 13 August.
We discussed prevalent social attitudes to memory loss and dementia and how we can challenge some of the negative stereotypes and work together to create a warm, inclusive society that embraces difference.

We talked about the importance of creating dementia–friendly meeting spaces. We looked at examples of signage that can be put up in buildings to help people living with dementia navigate the building.
Using a clear and large font (such as Arial size 16 or larger) printed in black on a contrasting yellow background can help people to read signs more easily. Using pictures as well as words is also helpful for people living with dementia.
Examples of dementia friendly signage, freely available from the Alzheimer’s Society see here and the photos below:
a lift sign

Signs are best placed at eye level or just below as sometimes people have difficulty looking up.
The Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP) has some helpful advice here.
Thank you, Carla, for coordinating the group and for the healthy refreshments. Thanks also to Haringey Irish Centre for hosting the workshop.
Congratulations to Anne D., Carla F., Clarene G., Margaret G., Martin L., Mary B., Samuel E. and Seamus D. from Haringey Irish Centre for successfully completing our Cuimhne workshop on Understanding Memory Loss and Dementia!
